Ropeway
Only one of its kind in this region and is still in operation. It takes the passenger to the highest point of the city of Gangtok covering the distance of about on1km in only seven minutes. The lower terminal station is located at Deorali Market, the intermediate terminal at Nam Nang and the upper terminal station is below Secretariat (Tashiling). One can truly enjoy the panoramic view as the Ropeway goes over the City.
Tsomgo Lake-
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Changu Lake is a glacial lake in Sikkim and located at an altitude of 12,310 feet. The name Tsomgo means 'Source of water'. It's located 35kms from Gangtok town and on the Gangtok-Nathula highway. This is one of the few and awesome high altitude lakes in India. The lake becomes doubly attractive with the reflections of the surrounding hills on the water. From Gangtok which is at 5410 ft, the altitude rises to about 10,000 ft in just 15kms. You can imagine how steep the gradient would be in this stretch of the road.
Ranka Monastery-
Monastery in Sikkim has its unique signature / aura about it. This monastery is also known as the Lingdum Monastery. This is a fairly peaceful place and hence one can spend more time photographing or simply going around the place. There is a long line of prayer wheels just near the entrance. It is customery spinning these prayer wheels. Before the Tibetian New Year one can find the young Buddhist monks practising the Lama dance. It has a distinct style and form and is quite enjoyable just to see them training. There is steep flight of stairs which leads guest to the inner sanctum. It is better to visit this place during prayer.
Ganesh Tok-
Ganesh Tok is the right place to have a complete view of Gangtok, which is spread beautifully over the hill slopes. Being the highest point here lying at an altitude of 6500 feet and just 7 kms from Gangtok, Ganesh Tok offers spectacular views of the city and the magnificent Khangchendzonga.
Hanuman Tok-
Hanuman Tok is one of the most important places to see in the Indian state of Sikkim. It is one of the most renowned temples of the state. The Hanuman Tok at Sikkim is dedicated to Hanuman, one of the gods in the Hindu religion.The temple of Hanuman Tok is looked after by a division of the army department of India. The Hanuman Tok in Sikkim itself provides wonderful photographic views of the Khangcendzonga. The snow-capped mountain peaks look heavenly from this temple.
Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial Temple-
There is a touching story associated with this temple. Harbhajan Singh was a Sentry of Punjab Regiment and was posted here as part of border patrol force. The border with China is nearby. In October 1968 he disappeared. It is said that while escorting mules carrying provisions, he fell into a stream and drowned. After a few days he reappeared in the dreams of one of his sentry colleagues and asked him to make a memorial here on his name.
The sentries then made a samadhi and later this temple was built. Although Harbhajan Sing is no more, the sentries and guards here believe that his spirit is still alive and he is therefore treated as a living being. They all believe that Harbhajan will guard and protect them in this very difficult terrain. In fact there has been reports that Chinese soldiers across the border having seen a turbaned sentry doing his rounds at night. Many sentries here believe that Harbhajan comes here every night as his camp bed sheet gets crumpled every morning and his polished shoes turn muddy by the evening.
Himalayan Zoological Park
Himalayan Zoological Park is located near Ganesh Tok. Its a large Park spread over 205 hectares at 5840 ft asl height and requires a bit of walking to explore it fully. The park is home to Red Pandas, Snow Leopard, Barking Deer, Bears and other animals. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary-
Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a nature park in the Indian state of Sikkim. It has forty species of rhododendron trees. It is located near Lachen in North Sikkim district.
Banjhakri Falls
Banjhakri Waterfalls lies amidst a lush green valley spread over nearly 2 acres and is quite nice and popular among tourist. It is surrounded by trees and gushing mountain stream. The Park has a Shamanistic theme. Hence, while the location of the park penetrating the forest spreads and seeks to enhance the essence of the occult and the unknown. The place itself is littered with ethnic sculptures and figurines of the Jhakri culture.
